Sherwood Park’s bylaws set clear rules on portable signs, from maximum height and area to setback distances and permit timelines.

General limits on portable signs

  • Maximum height: 3.0 m
  • Maximum sign area: 5.0 m²
  • Maximum width: 3.0 m
  • Signs may not be illuminated and may not include audio
  • Must not interfere with ingress/egress or traffic, or obstruct views.

Setbacks / separation requirements

  • 10.0 m from a lot line abutting a non-residential lot
  • 15.0 m from a lot line abutting a residential lot
  • 3.0 m from any access or driveway
  • 10.0 m from an intersection
  • 30.0 m from another portable sign
  • 23.0 m from a freestanding sign (permanent sign)

Restrictions on placement

  • Portable signs are not allowed on vacant or undeveloped parcels
  • Not allowed in Direct Control zones (unless specifically listed)
  • Not allowed if the parcel already has an approved changeable copy (freestanding) sign
  • Exception: In zones C3, C5, or ILT, one portable sign may be permitted even on parcels otherwise disallowed.

Duration & permit

  • A portable sign may be placed on a site for up to 365 days from approval date. After expiry, a new permit is needed.
  • If located in a road right-of-way or on public land, the sign must be for public notice, only placed 7 days before event, and removed within 24 hours after the event.
